History of the Fennville Area Ambulance
The history of the Fennville Area Ambulance Service dates back to the early 1970s. Before that time, emergency medical services in the Fennville area were provided by local funeral homes and volunteer fire departments.
In 1972, a group of concerned citizens in Fennville recognized the need for a dedicated ambulance service to provide emergency medical care to the community. They formed the Fennville Area Ambulance Service as a volunteer organization, with a mission to provide prompt, high-quality care to those in need. They performed 12 hour shifts and answered calls via landline until pagers were issued and the department began being dispatched by central dispatch.
The initial ambulance was a used vehicle donated by a local resident. It was equipped with basic medical supplies and staffed by volunteers who had received basic first aid and CPR training. Calls for emergency assistance were taken through the local police department.
Over the years, the Fennville Area Ambulance Service expanded its capabilities and resources. They upgraded their ambulance fleet, equipment, and training to keep up with changing medical standards. They also transitioned from being a solely volunteer-based organization to having paid staff members to ensure 24/7 coverage.
In the early 2000s, the Fennville Area Ambulance Service moved into a new facility that provided increased space for their vehicles and equipment. This allowed for better organization and more efficient operations.
Today, the six communities who coordinated on the Fennville Area Ambulance Service: City of Fennville and southern Manlius, Lee, Clyde, Ganges, and southern Saugatuck Townships partner with Life EMS to provide service to the Fennville community and surrounding areas. They have a dedicated team of highly trained paramedics and emergency medical technicians who provide advanced life support and transport services. They work closely with local police, fire departments and First Responders as well as hospitals and clinics to ensure seamless patient care.
Life EMS plays a crucial role in the community, providing emergency medical care during times of crisis and serving as a lifeline for those in need.
Each of the participating six communities appoints a community member to the Emergency Services Committee, the group which manages the contract with Life EMS.
Some early contributors that the Emergency Services Committee would like to recognize include: Dr. James Clark, Chuck Miner, John Kelley, Frank Hillary, Gary Korman, John McMahon, Jim Boyner, Dr. Mike Clark, Betty Jackson, Deb Jones, Sally Cassal, and Dr. Ken Kratzer.
